“Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:25-31 (NIV).
Commentary: Peter exercised his faith in Jesus Christ by actually stepping out of the boat to walk on the water. Something that is practically impossible to do due to gravity. Nonetheless he took the action to step on the water. He walked on the water for a little while until fear got a hold of him and he doubted in his heart whether he could truly be walking on the water. Then he began to drown, sinking into the water.
What can we learn from this? First, we must have faith in God that He can do whatever He had promised us. Second, we must take some actions towards achieving what we had already prayed to God for. Third, we must totally eliminate fear from our hearts.
Prayers: Give us, O Lord, a heart of faith, courage to act, and the power to continue believing in your divine guidance.
